Google Search testing new ‘Short videos’ Search carousel-Back in August, Google Discover relaunched “short videos” to appear on webpages, regular videos, and later AMP-based web stories. Google is testing YouTube in search of shorts and other short-form content, ahead of its beta coming to the US next month.
The card has the YouTube Play logo in the upper-left corner, while the video title and “YouTube” appear below. Tapping immediately opens the YouTube app and a new fullscreen player where you can like/dislike, view comments, share, and see “more” – send details, reports, or feedback. There is no search bar with control play/pause only. You can swipe down to jump to a new short and go back.
Youtube shorts monetization
When we saw the “short video” carousel at Discover last year, it surfaced with clips from Indian Tickcock contestant Trail and Google Region 120 Project Tangi, which focuses on 60-second DIY “quick videos”.
Google Search testing new ‘Short videos’ Search carousel-Back in Discover, you have the option to “Don’t show it again” from the overflow menu, while this carousel is shown with AMP “Stories”.
The carousel displays 10 videos, while there are some nuances to what content appears here. “YouTube shorts” are up to 15 seconds long and are made using the “shorts camera” which is currently available only in India. Accessed from the Create menu at the bottom bar of the YouTube app, this new “abbreviated video creation tool” lets you select music during recording, adjust speed, and set hands-free countdown timers.
However, YouTube is encouraging all creators to upload short vertical videos that are up to 60 seconds long, and tagged with #shorts in the title or description. Those videos are also featured in the special player UI described above, various carousel in the YouTube app, and – now – Discover.
Google Discover today already surfaces YouTube content regularly in the form of full cards, and today the addition of shorts is a natural extension that will help promote the beta format.
